Guilty Gear X – PS2

Information about the game.

Guilty Gear X  is a very exciting fighting game. It introduces many new ideas to the genre, is the first high-definition 2D fighting game ever released, and is perhaps the best 2D fighting game since SNK and Capcom.

The first thing that will catch your eye is the visuals.  Guilty Gear X’s visuals are absolutely stunning. It’s amazing what the high-resolution hand-drawn graphics offer. The effects are excellent, the backgrounds are beautiful, and the characters look great. My only issue with  GGX’s visuals  is the animation. While they’re not completely lacking, they don’t look as good as they should. Still, this is one of the best-looking 2D games ever made.

As expected, the audio isn’t anything special. The sound effects are as they should be, with a few exceptions (the rushing air sounds a bit weird). The electric guitar music is fairly standard, though it fits well with the game. Then there’s the gameplay.  Guilty Gear X  is unique, to say the least. The new gameplay features added are interesting and a nice change of pace. First, you can build up your own meter just by moving forward. While this is cool, you’ll lose it if you don’t progress.

Next up, there’s the “Roman Cancel” feature. For half the value of the Special Gauge, you can press three buttons to cancel the rollback of most attacks, even after a collision is detected. This can lead to some over-the-top attack combinations. Of course, these aren’t all of  GGX ‘s unique features  ; others include “Instant Block” (similar to “Defend Only” in  Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves  ), “Perfect Defense,” and “Instant Kill.” Yes, you heard that right. It’s possible to kill an opponent with a single attack. Fortunately, these attacks usually only work against the most clumsy opponents.

Overall, Guilty Gear X is an absolutely fantastic game. I can’t say it surpasses  Mark of the Wolves  or  Street Fighter 3: Third Strike  , but it’s definitely worth a try, especially since good fighting games on PC are rare. This rare English-language version of the game is adapted from the popular PlayStation version by Cyberfront Studios.
