As in Vigilante 8 , players control a vehicle and eliminate all other vehicles in the arena using weapons and upgrades. Players can choose to play in Story mode, Mission mode, or play with a variety of robots in Arcade mode. The game also offers a new two-player co-op mode, Grand Melee Deathmatch, where the player endures attacks from multiple AI opponents. Second Offense mode introduced the “Save Points” system, which allows players to upgrade their vehicle by collecting save points from destroyed opponents, improving the vehicle’s offensive and defensive capabilities, speed, and targeting. The vehicle’s exterior changes with increasing save points, transforming into a completely different design when fully upgraded. Special icons scattered throughout the game area allow players to improve their movement in certain environments, such as hover pods, skis, and outboard motors. [ 4 ] Flamethrowers now join the five standard weapons in the original game—mines, rockets, machine guns, guided missiles, and mortars—with each weapon now capable of performing three special attacks using control pad gestures. The “All-Out Strike” and “Massive Strike” fighting modes from the first game have also been retained, as well as the concept of stages with interactive features.
Completing secondary objectives in Mission Mode will also unlock secret characters. In addition to being able to play music CDs, players can also access Vigilante 8 levels for multiplayer matches by inserting the game disc.
